Temple Beth Ora has education opportunities for people of all ages. From Kindergarten to Bar/Bat Mitzvah to Adult Education, we have many programs available to help you further your Jewish Learning.

Do you have a child approaching Bar/Bat Mitzvah age?
Our synagogue requires a minimum of two years of Beit Sefer (grades 5 & 6) prior to the B’nei Mitzvah year (grade 7). Please contact Steve Friedenthal (TBO Administrator) at tboffice@shaw.ca to discuss your child’s Bar / Bat Mitzvah preparations.

Or Shalom Community Religious School
Or Shalom, Edmonton’s community religious school, is a joint program with Temple Beth Ora and Beth Shalom Congregation since 2011. Please contact the TBO office if you are interested in learning more about our educational program for children, either by email at tboffice@shaw.ca or by phone at 487-4817.

Adult Education classes

Adult Beginning Hebrew classes
Have you always wanted to be able to read the Hebrew in the prayer book?  Learn letters, vowels, roots, and more! In the fall, we have a partnership with Beth Shalom synagogue.  TBO members are invited to join the Beginner Hebrew class taught by Cantor David Mannes, (of Beth Shalom synagogue) on Sunday afternoons. There will be a charge (approximately $300) which can be tax deductible.

B'nei Mitzvah students

Introduction to Judaism
This course provides an introduction to a wide spectrum of Jewish topics, this lay-led course provides an introduction to a wide spectrum of Jewish topics, through readings and lively discussions. Classes begin Tuesday September 30 at 7:00 pm [October 7 and 14]. During these first three classes we will be talking about the concept of Covenant. Thereafter the Introduction to Judaism Classes will be moved to Wednesday evenings beginning October 22. These classes are for those who are considering conversion to Judaism, for those entering into an interfaith relationship between a Jew and a non-Jew and for any member of the community who wishes to get new perspectives on what it means to be a Jew in twenty-first century Canada. If you are interested in attending, contact the TBO office at 780.487.4817.

Other events
Havdallah Evenings: Join us monthly for Havdallah and an adult education program, with topics ranging from prayerbooks to candle-making. TBO has a tradition of holding Adult Education/Havdalah evenings throughout the year. Topics range from social action issues to ethical dilemma’s to personal Jewish journey stories. The events are hosted by TBO members, and start at 7:45 pm. Join us for a warm, informative, interactive evening full of great food and conversation!

Torah Study: Join us on alternate specified Saturday mornings for a discussion, analysis and interpretation of the week’s Torah portion. Discussion goes deep and across many perspectives. The Torah study starts at 10 am [refreshments provided, of course]. See the TBO calendar for dates.
