Temple Beth Ora is pleased to share the news that Rabbi Chaya Gusfield has accepted our offer of the position of High Holy Days rabbi with Temple Beth Ora. She will first come to Edmonton on the weekend of July 12. This will be an opportunity to begin to get to know one another and to plan for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in person.
Rabbi Gusfield lives in Oakland, California and comes to Temple Beth Ora with an eclectic background…
- Originally from Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, she was raised in a Reform congregation in San Diego and began her career as a legal aid lawyer and then community mediator in the Bay area.
- While her daughter was preparing to become a bat mitzvah she ‘got hooked’ and began a path that ultimately led to becoming a rabbi. She received her ordination through the non-denominational Jewish Renewal movement in 2006.
- Since her ordination, she has served as Assistant Rabbi and b’nei mitzvah coordinator at Beth Chaim Congregation in Danville, California; Co-leader/Rabbi for senior residents in the Reutlinger Community for Jewish Living; and spiritual leader for Kehilla Community Synagogue, as well as a guest rabbi through northern California.
- Rabbi Gusfield has had a continuous interest in pastoral care since 2004 and is close to completing a full-time residency as chaplain for Summit/Alta Bates Medical Centre in Oakland and Berkeley.
