Counting the Omer Food Drive
Temple Beth Ora holds a food drive for Jewish Family Services and Edmonton’s Food Bank during the period between Pesach and Shavu’ot. Last year, congregants were very generous and filled two boxes, which were divided between the two organizations.
The food drive was a symbolic way to count the omer, the period of seven weeks between Pesach and Shavu’ot. At harvest time, we are commanded in the Torah to leave the corners of our fields for the poor. As a way of counting the omer, and bringing this mitzvah to fruition, TBO members were asked to collect one item of non-perishable food for each day of the omer (a total of 50).
TBO has kept a Food Bank donation box year-round because of the successful drive and the need in the community.
